TAPCUG Presidents' Column
July, 2010
Late Saturday night on October 2, 2010, my wife
Mutsie and I returned home after traveling through
four states visiting old friends and
acquaintances. We co-hosted a military reunion of
old helicopter pilots in Philadelphia, PA. There
were excursions throughout the city of Philadelphia
and we attended a RotorFest which was an all
helicopter air show at the American Helicopter
Museum in West Chester, PA. We had a wonderful
time meeting old friends and rehashing old war
stories with some enhancements since the last time
they were told. The ordeal of traveling all those
distances left us exhausted. It's taking several days
for us to recover.
The presenter for our October meeting was a no
show. We found out later that it was due to an
unforeseen emergency. However John Wickliffe,
our Program Chairperson had wisely prepared as an
alternate presenter. John did a great job considering
the circumstances. The topic for the October meeting was Dragon Naturally Speaking
V.11. Maggie Smith our Data Line Editor wrote an
excellent description of the topic, even though she
was not at the meeting. She rarely misses a meeting
in all the many years she has been with TAPCUG. I
will quote her description verbatim.
Dragon Naturally Speaking, V. 11
Dragon Naturally Speaking is the program
where you talk and IT types!! After your
learning sessions, (about seven or eight, I can‘t
remember) your computer ̳learns‘ your voice,
accent and inflections resulting in a program
that can differentiate your spoken word of
̳tomato‘ from the word of ̳potato‘.
Your learning sessions also include the
commands you will need to know to instruct
your computer, such as ̳Edit, Select All. Bold,
Italics.‘
This program is great for people who have handicaps (arthritis,
carpal tunnel, etc.) and are unable to type as well as they have in the
past. A few of our members have been using Dragon Naturally for
quite a few years and love the program!
